한지로 피어나는 감성

여성적이며 유연한 한지는 한국의 전통 종이로 역사속에서 그 매력을 뽐내어왔다. 닥나무를 삶고 말리고 두드려 인고의 시간을 거친 한지위에 피어나는 감성…. 특정 주제나 형식을 고수하지 않고 민화로 시작해 현대 미술과 설치 작품까지 한지로 각자 다른 작업을 하는 LA 와 필라델피아, 뉴욕의 작가들이 새해 첫 전시를 한지위에 펼친다.

Artists from Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York, who do not focus on specific themes or formats, but rather start with folk paintings, modern art and even installations, are holding their first exhibition for the new year.

정동현 (Dong Hyun Chung)
서울 미대를 졸업 후 파사데나 아트센터서 수학한 작가 정 동현은 역사속 한국 여인의 아픔을 주로 표현해 왔다. 페인트나 물감 없이 오로지 1600가지의 천연물감을 들인 한지로만 하는 독특한 작업을 작품에 표현해온 작가며 여러색의 한지를 층층이 겹으로 붙이고 으깨고 찢고 드릴로 긁어 색과 형태를 찾아가는 수고의 과정을 작품에 담아 낸다. 그녀의 작품은 설명이 없어도 마음이 아릴 정도로 세월의 이야기가 아련하게 녹아내려 슬픔마저 아름다워 보인다
LA에 거주하며 작업하는 그녀는 도저히 한지로만 한 작품이라고 믿어지지 않는 독특한 작업을 뉴욕서 처음 선보인다. 어디론 가 숨어버리고 싶을 때 가는 곳… Coming there…로 평안함을 선사한다.
After graduating Seoul National University of Arts, Dong Hyun Jung studied at the Pasadena Art Center and has mainly expressed the pain of women in Korean history. Without the use of paint, Dong Hyun Jung has only used 1,600 kinds of naturally colored Korean Hanji paper to express his unique work. Through a laborious process he creates different colors by attaching, crushing and tearing the multi-colored Hanji paper in layers and forms shapes by drilling lines. Even without an explanation, the beauty of his work melts the history of the years into a heartbreaking story. Dong Hyun Chung lives and works in LA and presents his first unique piece in New York, that is not believed to be a work of only Korean Hanji paper alone.
Where to go when you want to go somewhere and hide… ‘Coming there’…provides the peace.
우보경 (Bo Kyung Woo)
국민대에서 도자기를 Pratt에서 그래픽 디자인과 Pratt 대학원에서 패케지 디자인을 전공한 우 보경 작가는 이조시대 14세기에서 19세기 한국의 전통적인 한국 민속화에서 영감을 받아 김홍도와 신윤복 스타일의 작품을 묘사하며 여인의 삶과 이야기, 학자들을 주로 한지나 목판에 담아 왔다. Pratt 에서 석사를 하던 중 자신의 회사 BOGO를 설립해 그래픽과 디자인을 해 옴과 동시에 작가로서의 기반도 확고히 다졌다.
그래서인지 그녀는 섬세한 디테일에 강하며 한국 민속화를 연구하여 민화의 정서 또한 놀랍게 잘 담아내고 있다. 이번 전시에는 한지에 작업한 화조도를 선보이는데 마치 살아서 사랑으로 노래하는듯한 새들이 활짝핀 꽃과 서로 화답하는듯 새해에 다가올 희망같은 작품으로 아름답게 힐링을 준다.
Bo Kyung Woo majored in Ceramics at Kookmin University and Graphic Design at Pratt Institute. While studying Package Design at Pratt Graduate School she also started working at a company. She was inspired by traditional Korean folk paintings from the 14th-19th centuries of the Yi Dynasty, where scholars have been painting stories, mainly, on Korean paper or woodblocks. While studying at Pratt, she founded her own company, BOGO, where she worked on graphic designs and simultaneously solidifying her foundation as an artist. Therefore, she has skills with fine details and her studies in Korean Folk paintings capture the sentiments of her folk paintings, surprisingly well. For this exhibition, a flower painting made on Korean paper is presented. Birds who seem to live and sing with love respond to flowers blooming. A work, which is like hope that comes with a new year, bring beautiful healing.
천세련 (Sei Ryun Chun)
영혼을 정화하는 차를 마시고 자연과 하나 되기 위해 명상하며 우주의 별을 작품에 담고 바람과 함께 매일 자신의 노래를 이땅에 담는 작가, 천 세련…. 한국의 전통 다예 문화예술 전문가로서 작품에서 자연과 함께 하는 사람을 만끽하는 깊은 인향이 느껴지고 그녀의 철학과 내면의 모습이 전해진다
사람들마다 좋은 인연을 만나 서로의 마음 창을 열어 실타래를 풀어서 형상을 만든다. 인연이 닿아야 하고 인연이 주어지기 위해 연줄이 이어지기를 바라며 오가는 길이 있었듯이 시작도 끝도 없는 크고 작은 원들로 구성된 은하수 밤하늘 별자리와 세상을 밝히는 등으로 설치 작업을 선보인다. 건국대 미대와 아트센터 NJ, NYU 대학원을 수료했다.
Sei Ryun Chun…an artist who drinks spirit-purifying tea, mediates to become one with nature, puts the stars of the universe in her work and, with the wind, plays her songs on the earth every day. Graduated from Kunkook University College of Arts, New Jersey Art Center and New York University Graduate School, as an expert in Korean traditional tea art and culture, her philosophy and inner appearance are conveyed in her works and you can feel the deep inclination of enjoying nature with people. Each person has a destiny for a good relationship, opening the window of another’s heart and untying the thread to form a shape. Just as there is a way back and way forth, there is hope for a bond that can be given and received. Her installation is presented by the illuminating constellation of the Milky Way night sky, composed of large and small circles, with no beginning or end, and the world.
권남숙 (Nam Sook Kwon)
수도 여사대 회화과를 졸업하고 평생 꾸준히 작품 활동을 해온 권남숙 작가는 예술가로서 영적 지위도 중요하다고 생각하는 문화 사역자이다. 그녀에게 작업은 하나님의 메시지이며, 눈에 보이지 않는 영적 흐름속에서 작가의 영적 상태를 보여주는 도구이기도 하다. 갈등하면서 만난 하나님의 찬란한 빛… 그 생명의 빛은 하늘에서 오는 능력이기에 작품이 다른 사람들에게 비춰질 빛이 될수 있기를 기도하며 그 빛을 거머 잡고 작가는 오늘도 정금같은 작업을 이어가고 있다. 언약속에서 이제 빛을 전하고자 하는 권 남숙 작가는 한지위에 천과 여러 재료를 올린 작품으로 광야의 들판을 벗어나 더 깊이 하나님의 빛을 따라가는 소통의 통로로 이끈다.
After receiving a bachelors in painting at Sudo Women’s University, Nam Sook Kwon has been steadily working throughout her life as a cultural minister who believes that spiritual status is also important as an artist. The light of God is both conflicting and radiant, for the light of life is a power from heaven. She prays that her work can be a light that will shine on other people. As an artist who wants to deliver light, in a covenant, she places cloth and various materials on a single Hanji Korean rice paper, creating a passage of communication that goes beyond the field of wilderness and follows the light of God deeper.
정태숙 (Tae Sook Jung)
자연과 인간은 혹독한 환경에서도 살아남아 결국 생명으로 가득 찬 꽃을 피울 수 있음을 삶에 결합하는 작가 정 태숙은 폭풍을 겪고 견뎌 왔지만 기쁨과 아름다움으로 승화시킴을 작업에서 보여준다.
전통적 한지의 재료의 특성을 이용하여 먹을 입히고 여러번 엷은 색을 덧칠하여 종이 속부터 스며 차올라 고유의 색을 보이게 하는 발색과 분채 물감의 특징을 한지 위에 내보인다. 변화와 움직임 속 서서히 색이 드러나면 붓으로 반복적이고 규칙적인 셀 수 없는 선들을 차곡차곡 그리는 작업…. 바탕의 색들은 자유롭고 우연적인 움직임이 되고 그 위에 그어진 선들은 마치 절제화 된 우리의 삶과도 같아 보인다. 홍대 미대, 대학원 졸업, NYU 수료.
Tae Sook Jung graduated from Hong-ik University with both a bachelors and a master’s degree. Her main artistic interest is focused on the unity of nature and human experience. In her works, she observes that nature can survive extremely harsh conditions and yet still blossom with life. Having personally struggled and weathered many storms, she has also experienced joy and beauty in her life. With this concept of nature, she combines and integrates her experiences into her works. Her method of creating harmony and beauty, using the tension between filled and unfilled space in her composition, displays a vigorous energy of unity. Using materials like traditional Korean paper, she coats the paper over and over again in light colored layers with ink. Using traditional pigments mixed together, she meticulously paints repetitive and regular countless lines with a brush. The coloring,processing and diffusing of the paint creates multiple hues that display change and movement. The colors of the background become free, like nature, and the lines painted invite viewers to reflect and enjoy the patterns and color of the painting. Overall, this process as an embodiment of accepting adversity in order to celebrate the resilience of life.
백록현 (Rok Hyun Baek)
어떤 특별난 개념을 표현하는게 아니라 실내나 거리, 사람들의 삶의 일상적인 장면과 풍경, 기능을 소중한 테마로 삼아 그 안에 마음과 열정이 응축된 단순한 힘을 표현하는 작가 백 록현… 자신을 속이는 그림을 그리는 것보다 자신의 생각이나 감정을 성실하게 표현하는 것이 가장 중요하다는 작가의 작업을 보면 현재 삶의 아름다움을 함께 공감할수 있는듯 하다. 비를 온 몸으로 맞으며 그 느낌을 향유하고 싶었던 작가는 비내리는 풍광을 표현키 위해 한지위에 아교를 사용해서 크리스탈을 석채랑 혼합해 화면에 붙이는 신작으로 반짝이며 빛나는 새해를 선물같이 전해 줄것이다. 효성 여대 졸업후 일본 토쿄의 Tama 대학원에서 석사를 받았다. 색 한지나 한지위에 강렬한 브러시 스트로크를 사용해 에너지를 표현하거나 전통적인 브러시로 자유롭게 표현하는 작가들은 공간 사이의 긴장감을 이용하여 조화와 아름다움을 창조하고 있다. 풍요로운 자연속 한지의 여러가지 변화를 묘사하는 작가들은 2021년을 열면서 경이로움과 지혜로 가득한 활기 넘치는 깊은 삶과 힐링을 선사할것이다.
Rok Hyun Baek graduated from Hyosung Women’s university and received her master’s degree at Tama Graduate School in Tokyo, Japan. Rather than expressing a special concept, artist Rok Hyun Baek uses everyday scenes, landscapes and abilities of people’s lives as a precious theme of conveying power, emotion and passion. Instead of creating works that deceives oneself, she believes that faithfully expressing one’s thoughts and feelings is significantly important in an artist’s work. Therefore, her pieces evoke a sense of empathy where we can sympathize with the beauty of our present life. Wanting to express the joy of feeling rain fall on her body, she glues crystal mixed with stone onto traditional Korean Hanji paper. With this piece, she delivers a sparking and shining gift for the new year.
Artist who expresses energy using strong or free brushstrokes on Hanji, create harmony and beauty by using the tension between spaces. Opening the year 2021 with artists who embrace the various changes in the rich nature of Korean Hanji paper, will provide a vibrant, deep life, full of healing, wonder and wisdom.
